My childhood best friends dad, my second father, a loving, caring, hard working family man.
I have never nor will I ever forget yourself & Alison & the childhood you helped give me or the love you both gave to me.
I have so many wonderful memories of that time, fun on the Broadford farm - including being caught smoking by my dad at my 16th bday party in the woolshed there. To going to the cricket or footy at the MCG - GO BLUES! To helping out on the farm in Finley & my first experiences with leeches from swimming in the channel - which I never did again lol
To playing table tennis in the sunroom up there, or riding motorbikes, driving utes, drenching sheep, rounding up livestock & being in the Header at rice cropping time.
And I was especially blessed to be included in a trip to Caloundra one year another memory I will never forget.
And roast lamb meals, where Alison would make her homemade gravy with the pan juices & flour - little did I know that the yummy lamb had come from the paddock until after getting my license & driving down the driveway to witness yourself & Alex slaughtering a pig from memory & then the penny dropped & I nearly crashed the car & you thought it was soo funny!
You also had what I call ‘your own smell’ yes it sounds weird, but you always smelt like wool, as if ingrained in your skin, not that I minded because it was a smell of comfort, of a safe place, a loving place & I can close my eyes now & think back to that time & I can smell you - a memory I will cherish.
I’m sorry I couldn’t attend the funeral in person, but Alison, Alex, Jen & Lisa know how much I love you & what you meant to me - as I hope you did too.
I will forever be grateful for being blessed to have you as apart of my life.
RIP
Sharon Elson

My father Jock had a particular memory of John he would tell me repeatedly. It involved his lack of attendance at church (due to joining the CFA.) His mother, who dad recalled being a real lady was questioned by the minister as to why. A fellow parishioner sprung to her defence telling him ‘It’s an essential service!’ In which Mrs Thomson replied ‘why, thank
you Mr Portbury!’ (Dad got amusement from this for the rest of his life)
To all the Thomson family sending you all our love and strength at this sad time.
Mark, Amanda, Nell and Audrey.

Dad, thanks for all of our wonderful special memories together. Early morning walks along the beach before breaky, getting me to drive the ute when I could barely reach the peddles to help you feed the. stock. Always cracking a joke and making us laugh. will forever hold them close to my heart. Thanks for being the greatest most kind role model for me growing up. The life morals you taught me will stay with me all my life as I continue your legacy through myself and your grandchildren. The stories that have surfaced the last few days have truly emphasised how much you have positively impacted so many lives. I love you always... until we meet again.
